The Quran about sins
In the name of God, the Gracious, the Merciful
Sin is an act contrary to the law of God, a violation of God’s will by action, word or thought. Also, the very desire not to follow God’s commandment is considered as a sin.
The Almighty created laws of the nature corresponding to His project of our world. These laws are directly related to physics (nature) and proven by scientists. But there are also spiritual laws according to which righteous actions entail spiritual enrichment, and sins, accordingly, turn into misfortunes. And because our physical existence reflects the spiritual essence, our thoughts and actions undoubtedly influence the quality of life.
Sin is a philosophical and moral concept, therefore its interpretation depends on the philosophy that you profess, even if you do not realize that it is a philosophy.
In the Quran, to denote reprehensible action the term “ism” is used. Consider how this concept is explained in the Prescription. “Ism” – from Arabic means – “sin”.
The Quranic term “ism” is used both in general terms and in specific situations, which are discussed below.
The situation with people who deny the signs of God is very depressing.
And let not those who closed themselves ever think that We extend their time of life because it is better for them. We only extend it for them so that they may increase in sin, and for them is a humiliating punishment! (3:178)
And on the contrary, to achieve success, the Creator prescribes the following provisions.
… and cooperate in righteousness and circumspectness, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression. And beware of God, indeed, God is severe in penalty. (5:2)
And leave what is apparent of sin and what is concealed thereof. Indeed, those who earn sin will be recompensed for that which they used to commit! (6:120)
In the description of the believers, the Creator necessarily includes a reference to the avoidance of sins.
So whatever thing you have been given – it is but [for] enjoyment of the worldly life.
But what is with God is better and more lasting
for those who have believed and upon their Lord rely
And those who avoid the major sins and excessiveness, and when they are angry, they forgive (42:36-37)
That He may recompense those who do evil with what they have done and recompense those who do good with the best – Those who avoid the major sins and excessiveness, only [committing] slight ones. Indeed, your Lord is vast in forgiveness!
He was most knowing of you when He produced you from the earth and when you were fetuses in the wombs of your mothers. So do not claim yourselves to be pure; He is most knowing of those who circumspect! (53:32)
In order to clearly know the actions leading to a sin, in order to avoid their commission, let us see which of them are considered by the Almighty as the sin.
Types of sins:
- Killing people, their expulsion and persecution:
Then, you are those killing one another and evicting a party of your people from their homes, cooperating against them in sin and aggression… (2:85)
And those who do not invoke with God another deity or kill the personality which God has forbidden [to be killed], except by right, and do not commit fornication. And whoever should do that will take a sin upon himself! (25:68)
2. Unfair change of bequest:
Truly, the sin will lie on those who will change the bequest after he heard it. Indeed, God is Hearing and Knowing! (2:181)
3. Bribing an official for improper possession of another’s property:
And do not consume one another’s wealth in vainness! Do not send it to the rulers in order that you consume a portion of the wealth of the people in sin, while you know. (2:188)
4. Pride:
And when it is said to him, “Beware of God!” pride in the sin takes hold of him. Sufficient for him is Hellfire, and how wretched is the resting place! (2:206)
5. Taking away from wife material and financial resources spent on her, or transferred to her:
But if you want to replace one wife with another and you have given one of them a great wealth do not take from it anything. Would you take it with slander and manifest sin?! (4:20)
6. Attribution to God of not stated by Him provisions:
Look how they invent about God untruth! And sufficient is that as a manifest sin! (4:50)
7. Associating others with God
Indeed, God does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills. And he who associates others with God has certainly fabricated a tremendous sin. (4:48)
Say, “My Lord has only forbidden excessiveness – what is apparent of it and what is concealed – and sin, and oppression without right, and that you associate with God that for which He has not sent down authority, and that you say about God that which you do not know!” (7:33)
And those who do not invoke with God another deity or kill the personality which God has forbidden [to be killed], except by right, and do not commit fornication. And whoever should do that will take a sin upon himself! (25:68)
8. False accusation and perjury:
And whoever commits a sin only earns it against himself. And God is ever Knowing and Wise. But whoever earns a mistake or a sin and then blames it on an innocent [person] has taken upon himself a slander and manifest sin. (4:111-112)
And those who harm believing men and believing women for [something] other than what they have earned have certainly born upon themselves an evil speaking and manifest sin. (33:58)
9. Fornication:
…and do not commit fornication. And whoever should do that will take a sin upon himself! (25:68)
10. Sinful speech:
Why do the leading and scholars not forbid them from saying what is sinful and devouring what is unlawful? How wretched is what they have been practicing! (5:63)
11. Aggression:
And you see many of them hastening into sin and aggression… (5:62)
12. Devouring unlawful:
And you see many of them hastening into sin and aggression and the devouring of [what is] unlawful. How wretched is what they have been doing! (5:62)
13. Crime:
Say, “My Lord has only forbidden excessiveness – what is apparent of it and what is concealed – and sin, and oppression without right… (7:33)
14. Some of the assumptions:
O you who have believed! Avoid much assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin… (49:12)
The Quran covers actions in which there is no sin:
He has only forbidden to you dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than God. But whoever is forced, neither desiring [it] nor transgressing [its limit], there is no sin upon him. Indeed, God is Forgiving and Merciful. (2:173)
But if one fears from the bequeather an error or sin and corrects that which is between them, there is no sin upon him. Indeed, God is Forgiving and Merciful! (2:182)
And remember God during numbered days. Then whoever hastens in two days – there is no sin upon him; and whoever delays – there is no sin upon him – for him who is circumspect. And beware of God and know that unto Him you will be gathered. (2:203)
An important point for believers is an attitude to sinners. If anyone is caught with the sins prescribed in the Quran, then his testimony is not accepted:
O you who have believed! Testimony among you when death approaches one of you at the time of bequest there should be two just men from among you or two others from outside. If you are traveling through the land and the disaster of death should strike you, detain them after the prayer. Let them both swear by God if you doubt, “We will not exchange it for a price, even if he should be a near relative, and we will not withhold the testimony of God. Indeed, we would then be of the sinful!”
But if it is found that those two were guilty of the sin, then they would be replaced by two others, more worthy ones, of those against whom the former transgressed. And let them swear by God, “Our testimony is truer than their testimony, and we have not transgressed. Indeed, we would then be of the obscurantists!” (5:106-107)
The sinner has no right to occupy an administrative position:
So be patient for the judgement of your Lord and do not obey from among them a sinner or closed one! (76:24)
There are things in which sin and benefit are mixed. The attitude towards them is regulated only by benefit; therefore everything that EXCEEDS the benefit is SIN.
They ask you about substance that covers the mind and gambling. Say, “In them is great sin and benefit for people. But their sin is greater than their benefit.” (2:219)
The above passage is universal. With the help of it, many things that are not detailed in the Quran can be regulated. It can be any substances that cause the mind to be closed from adequate perception (medicines, drugs, tobacco, chemicals, etc.). This also applies to the games: if they are beneficial, then there is no problem, if they provoke a problem, then this is already considered as a sin.
